“I like femininity, not of the devout, but of the self-assured, cool and sophisticated kind.” - Jil Sander

As we await the debut of Jil Sander at Faradays for June 24, get to know the ethos and heritage of the brand—the inherent focus on tailoring and a commitment to producing less but better, Jil Sander has consistently held the idea of garments as lifelong investments, a pure choice for the forever wardrobe.

Jil Sander, renowned for her influence on fashion for over four decades, is hailed as "fashion's first feminist," championing modern women through their attire. Central to Sander's ethos are considerations of what women wear, how they wear it, and its enduring relevance.

Heidemarie Jiline "Jil" Sander began her fashion endeavours in 1968 when, while being the editor for the German magazine Petra, she opened a boutique in her hometown, Hamburg. A year later, aged only 24 and working on her mother’s sewing machine, she launched the eponymous label, from the get-go, establishing her signature vision that has remained consistent: purism.

“Initially, it was the unpractical in fashion that brought me to design my own line. I felt that it was much more attractive to cut clothes with respect for the living, three-dimensional body rather than to cover the body with decorative ideas.”

Pioneering a vision of purism amongst the elaborate and decorative fashion scape of the 1970s to 80s, Sander defined 90s minimalism. Despite initial setbacks, including a brute reception at her debut Paris show in 1975, Sander persevered, expanding her brand's reach. By 1979, the launch of the brand's first perfume, Pure, marked a milestone, followed by the company's public listing a decade later, fuelling rapid global expansion. In 1993, Sander celebrated the triumph by opening her flagship store on Avenue Montaigne in Paris.

Prada acquired a majority stake in her label in 2000, and Sander's departures and returns marked subsequent years, culminating in her final exit in 2014. The Jil Sander brand was then acquired by Italian fashion group OTB in March 2021.

Sander's impact extends beyond fashion design, her impact is recognised throughout branding, retail, and beauty products. Despite challenges, her unwavering commitment to purity and simplicity remains timeless. Her "strong and pure" style, characterised by neutral colours, clean cuts, and high-quality materials, epitomises femininity devoid of frivolity yet expresses an effortless seductiveness.

Minimalism finds its epitome in Jil Sander's collections, trading clichés of coldness for elegance and emotional depth. The Maison's contemporary style embraces masculine elegance for women, holding conceptualism while retaining its distinctive identity.
